Introduction to Indirekte Fragesätze with W-Fragen
Indirect questions with W-words (who, what, where, when, etc.) are used to ask questions in a polite or indirect way. In German, indirect questions often follow verbs like wissen (to know), fragen (to ask), and sagen (to say).
These questions start with a W-word, such as wer (who), was (what), wo (where), wann (when), and warum (why).
How to Form Indirect Questions with W-Fragen
In indirect W-questions, the W-word comes at the beginning of the question part, and the verb goes to the end of the clause:
- Direct: Wo ist der Bahnhof? (Where is the train station?)
- Indirect: Können Sie mir sagen, wo der Bahnhof ist? (Can you tell me where the train station is?)
