Introduction to “Weil” and “Da”

In German, weil and da are subordinating conjunctions used to explain reasons. Both words mean “because” in English but have slightly different nuances:

  • Weil is more commonly used in spoken German.
  • Da is used in formal contexts or to explain a reason already known to the listener.

Rules for Using Weil and Da

When using weil or da, the verb in the subordinate clause (the clause with weil or da) moves to the end of the sentence:
