In German, weil and da are subordinating conjunctions used to explain reasons. Both words mean “because” in English but have slightly different nuances:

- Da is used in formal contexts or to explain a reason already known to the listener.

When using weil or da, the verb in the subordinate clause (the clause with weil or da) moves to the end of the sentence:
